History

The original house, built in 1873 by Wisconsin Lt. Governor James Bingham, underwent extensive remodeling after being purchased by lumber baron Edward Rutledge in 1887 and exemplifies elegance both in structure and in furnishings.  When the renovations were completed, the Mansion was one of the most beautiful and elegant homes in Northern Wisconsin.

After Rutledge's death, Judge Dayton Cook bought the home. In 1973, his daughter Mabel sold it to the Chippewa Falls Historical Society and the Cook-Rutledge Mansion Trust was formed.  In 2006, this Trust gave way to the present Cook-Rutledge Mansion, Inc., a non-profit organization.
